These were my father's words to me (among many others...he's a rather talkative guy) when I was young. Quite frankly, I thought he was a little odd for saying it (as, no doubt, you do yourself right now). The scary thing is, it all makes sense to me now, which means that either 1) I've grown just as odd with age or 2) These are truly words of wisdom. On the assumption that the answer is number two (no pun intended), I'm putting this out there for the enlightenment of others (I'm getting into this enlightenment schtick. If you haven't already done so, please read my observations on the nature of fat). Besides, if the answer really is that I'm getting odd as I age, how am I supposed to know the difference anyway?
OK, so let's think about this. These golden words break down into three pieces:Keep your head cool
Not unsound advice. As long as you're keeping a cool head, you're making reasonable decisions, you're not letting little things excite you. You are in control of the situation.
Keep your feet warm
Once again, sound advice on a basic level. Take care of the basic needs. If your feet are warm, you either are managing to provide some sort of shelter for yourself, or you just bought a really nice pair of snowboots. Either way, the implication is your taking care of business, which means that you should, through extension, be able to take care of some of life's other incidentals like food and clothing...Keep your bowels free
This was always the one that hung me up. In fact, it made me giggle quite a bit in my younger days..and yet...it makes sense. Eat right, excercise, make sure you're getting enough fiber, and not only will your intestines thank you, but odds are the rest of your body will be pretty happy with you as well.
So, it's not earth-shattering...but it's sound. And once you break it down, it's just plain common sense (which, it seems, is what a lot of the high-priced self-help packages on the market are, once you look at them). But it does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
